holiday highlights

Our holidays were full of all of our favorite things - family, food, football, and fun.  And a few more that don't start with "f" - cold, celebrating the Christ-child, culture, and cuddling on the couch.

Wedan family Christmas was the Saturday before Christmas at our house.  It was the first time we were all together since last Christmas! The cousins had a lot of fun together.  Papa and MeeMaw stayed through Christmas morning.  We ice skated on the pond, went to the Christmas Eve service, Papa read The Cheesehead Night Before Christmas, ate Santa pancakes...oh...and Santa made a stop at our house!

After a couple days of left-overs, naps, and movie-watching, we went to Iowa to see my brother and his family.  The cousins had a lot of fun together!! We went to a waterpark and played lots of games. It was -22 degrees when set off to return home on New Years Eve.

New Years Day was the last day of Kwanzaa, so we made a soul-food feast: fried chicken, jojos, collard greens, biscuits, peanut soup, iced tea, and sweet potato pie!

Christmas Gift

It is five days 'til Christmas and I am obsessively tracking packages that have not arrived yet.  The half-dozen Christmas cards that I'm actually sending out are signed and addressed on the counter, waiting to be stuffed with the pictures that accidently got shipped to Colorado.  I spent yesterday and today cooking because I don't want to spend Christmas in the kitchen.  Last week, the eight hours Brett was at school were spent frantically running errands.  In the last two weeks, I've blown through a full month's worth of grocery money anticipating the 17 guests we will have over this weekend.  This was my third year helping coordinate the giving tree at our church, which I love doing, but averages 3-6 hours a week for a full six weeks.  I also took on what turned out to be a huge project which fully consumed two weeks of my life since Thanksgiving (more on that later).  And in the midst of all of this, I am not-giving-my-full-attention to homeschooling Brett.  I was completely sympathetic when one of my mom friends went on a rant on Facebook about hating Christmas.

But I don't hate Christmas.  I love Christmas!  I really do...I just don't love the constant overwhelmed feeling and ever-growing to-do list. I don't love the crowds.  I don't love being bombarded by messages to buy more.  Or the Pinterest sparkle that will not adorn my home. Or the expectations for an elaborate occasion complete with traditions, festive foods, decorations and-let's not forget- the gifts!

Every mom on the planet knows the gifts are where the magic happens.  Otherwise, Santa would ring doorbells and sing Christmas carols.  And even though those gifts often bring momentary joy, every mom on the planet has found a much-wished-for toy lost in a cluttered mess just short of February. Worse yet- in the garage sale box by April.

The gifts under the tree will always disappoint but there is one gift that got this whole thing started. Long ago, far away, in a lowly manger God gave himself to a lost and broken world.  Do not let the Christmas clutter distract you from the baby, wrapped in rags, born to die that we may live in redeeming grace.

Romans 5:15-17 (The Message) Yet the rescuing gift is not exactly parallel to the death-dealing sin. If one man’s sin put crowds of people at the dead-end abyss of separation from God, just think what God’s gift poured through one man, Jesus Christ, will do! ...If death got the upper hand through one man’s wrongdoing, can you imagine the breathtaking recovery life makes, sovereign life, in those who grasp with both hands this wildly extravagant life-gift, this grand setting-everything-right, that the one man Jesus Christ provides?

Good news, Moms everywhere!  You don't have to make the magic happen!  It already did.  You just have to clear the clutter and make space for your little ones to adore The Little One.

Happy 10th Birthday, Brett!

It’s hard to believe that Brett is already 10! A decade! For his birthday, he wanted a baseball theme.  Since I love baseball, I was very excited one of my kids finally picked it for a birthday theme.  Brett was very specific – he wanted a Joe Mauer jersey cake.  Some family friends accompanied us to an arcade with laser tag and  a ropes course.  Brett got lots of baseball cards for his birthday.  It was a fun day!
Brett is enjoying doing some school at home and some school at Castle.  And I am enjoying teaching him!  We've studied tigers, national parks, and weather.  This fall, Brett took a tennis class.  Brett loves to play outside with his brother and friends from the neighborhood.  He also likes to sing and dance and puts together talent shows to entertain us.  He enjoys arts and crafts, building with Legos, cooking, and playing video games.

Here is Brett's birthday interview:
What is your favorite color? Blue.
What is your favorite food? Mashed potatoes.
What is your favorite thing to do? Play soccer.
What is your best memory from being 9 years old?  Going to the ballpark in Kansas City.
What is something you have learned to do in the last year? I learned about geckos.
What is something you want to learn or do in the next year? Catch a squirrel.

What makes you laugh? Google because it tells jokes when you ask it.

If you could be any animal for one day, what animal would you choose? I would be a squirrel so I could run fast.

What do you think your life will be like in 10 years? I will try catching a rabbit.

Happy 9th Birthday, Lydia!

Lydia is 9 years old!  She wanted to go ice skating for her birthday and somehow that evolved into a skating penguins themed birthday party.  She invited three friends and, together with her brothers, that made 6 kids and one mom on the skating rink.  It was a lot of fun!

Brett and Lydia decided they wanted to put all their candles in one spot which we learned creates quite a flame.  The penguins are chocolate covered strawberries and were a huge hit.
Lydia is enjoying 3rd grade.  She joined the school choir and also is participating in an invention fair.  She did a week-long camp through school where she chose a forensics class.  Now that volleyball is done, she is taking swimming lessons.  In her free time, she loves to read and do arts and crafts.  She is growing up too fast!
I thought it would be fun to do a birthday interview.  Here it is:

What is your favorite color? Purple.
What is your favorite food? Mac'n'cheese.
What is your favorite thing to do? Read or knit.
What is your best memory from being 8 years old?  Going to Missouri.
What is something you have learned to do in the last year? How to knit.
What is something you want to learn or do in the next year? Pass levels 5 and 6 in swimming.

What makes you laugh? My friends and me.
What are you afraid of? Spiders.
If you could be any animal for one day, what animal would you choose? Milo! (our guinea pig)
