the best day of the year

Every year, around March 1st, our cat starts to camp out in front of the door to the porch, as if to say, "Winter has got to be over by now". And every day, I tell her it's still cold out, she doesn't believe me, I let her out in the porch, and then she cries for me to let her back inside.

Well, on Tuesday, when I let Rocky out in the porch, she was greeted with sunshine and above freezing temps. She settled in to bathe in the sun, and her world was perfect.

Rocky, I know just how you feel.

The best day of the year if you happen to live in Minnesota and don't live for ice fishing, cross-country skiing, or snowmobiling has got to be the day the mercury inches above the 50 degree mark for the first time in 4 months. On this day, everyone is outside. Everyone seems lighter without their heavy coats weighing them down. And it seems like everyone you meet has a smile and and cheerful tone of voice to share.

It is a glimpse of the days to come. We all know there will undoubtedly be more snow, more ice, more heavy coats, more scraping windows and warming up cars, more shoveling. But we are too busy basking in the promise of spring to think about that.

Brett and I enjoyed our first two hour walk together and our world was perfect. Never mind that we were trudging through puddles and over icy patches.

working momma

All mommas are working mommas, but as of today I am taking on the task of jugging motherhood with career woman. Sigh.

I didn't cry. And I resisted the temptation to call the babysitter to "check-in". But I did look longingly at the clock every five minutes wondering what my little boy was doing and wishing the day away.

Four things helped me hold it together: (1) I love my job (2) I'm only working six days a month (3) Wonderful childcare - he's staying with a trusted friend four days a month and Daddy the other two (4) Summer is only 3 months away!

Some of the teachers got together and bought Brett this colorful puppy. It is so fun to watch him discover the world around him! He likes it.

(no laughing at his bald head-he can't help it)
